It’s everywhere. Lattes, Walgreens, Vape pens, dog treats, the list goes on. Whether you’ve tried it or not, you’re probably a little curious about a few things. What is CBD? Can I get high from CBD? Does it really help? I personally have chronic back problems from running, so I decided to do some research and answer some of my own questions.
What is CBD, anyway?
CBD is short for Cannabidoil and is a compound found in hemp plants. When it was first discovered in the late 1980’s it was found to interact with the body’s Endocannabinoid system (ECS), a system regulating the body’s general state of balance. This system regulates functions such as sleep, appetite, pain, and mood. All mammals naturally produce endocannabinoids, or chemical compounds that bind to cannabinoid receptors in your nervous system. The body reacts to these cannabinoid receptors, so when hemp is processed, it is effectively boosting the function of the endocannabinoid system, helping our body regulate itself in different ways.
Now that we know it’s not just a fad, let’s go over the usefulness of CBD. All cannabinoids, like THC, effect on the body by attaching to certain receptors, while the body is naturally producing cannabinoids on its own. True CBD hemp oil contains high levels of cannabidoil–providing vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and volatile acids.
Some believe CBD to be a more natural/holistic alternative to prescription medications and over the counter drugs. Since it is essentially optimizing the balance of the endocannabinoid system, it is being used in many different ways, and studies are being done to prove its effectiveness.
Here are some known uses:
- Pain relief and inflammation
- Depression, anxiety, and stress
- Appetite control
- Skin care
- Fighting cancer
Research on the benefits of CBD oil is ongoing, with new uses being discovered every day.
Ways to use it
It is recommended to talk with a doctor about specific dosages and uses in order to properly benefit from it, but there are many different ways the oil is being used and sold.
